WELCOME BACK

"Apply research and critical analysis to extend artistic and design practice" is our year long subject on Tuesday afternoons. But we're going to make it fun by publishing all our work online.

BUILD A BLOG
Today you need to start building your own blog at 'Blogger', just like mine at http://janesresearchandanalysis.blogspot.com/.

Step 1: Start creating at http://www.blogger.com by following the steps online at: http://www.youtube.com/user/BloggerHelp?blend=1&ob=0 (The video is in the You Tube link below. You can also see other Blogger help videos on this You Tube channel.). Make sure you name your blog: http://firstnamelastname.blogspot.com/.

Step 2: Write your exact URL on the board and on my list so we can all start following your posts.

Step 3Find at least three classmates whose Blog you want to follow. Go to Design > Layout > Add Gadget > Blog List and add their URL's. Be sure to follow me.

Step 4: Jazz up your template and publish a simple post that includes: the title as 'My Goals' and the content being a simple paragraph about what you want to achieve this year.

PLEASE NOTE: Only use this blog for this subject and treat it in a professional manner. Only post class assignments on the dates assigned.

GREEK RESEARCH EXAMPLE - NIKE

Appearance
Few people realise that Nike is actually an ancient Greek goddess and not originally a world wide sporting brand. In ancient times she was depicted as being a beautiful winged, female goddess but lost her association with wings in classical times.

History
Nike was a goddess who symbolised strength, speed and victory and can be seen on coins from the ancient Greek culture. The story goes that she had important jobs of driving chariots into battle and often rewarded victorious soldiers with glory and fame. Nike's persona can also be traced through Roman culture as the goddess Victoria.

Adventures
According to classical myth, Nike's mother brought her to Zeus when the god was assembling allies for the Titan War against the older deities. This epic war waged long before the presence of mankind and the story often goes that the rebels loose and the dominant race of deities rule Mount Olympia.

Relationships
The geneology of mythological Greek gods seems very important and Nike's relationships were a part of this. She was the daughter of of Pallas (Titan) and Styx (Water), and the sister of Cratos (who sybolises strength), Bia (symbol of force), and Zelus (known for rivalry). Nike and her siblings were best buddies with Zeus, the dominant deity of the Greek gods.

Symbols
Nike is a prominent symbol in sport and is often associated with wings, crowns, palm fronds and coming first place. As a result she is commonly portrayed on medals (2008 Chinese Olympic medals) for victorious athletes.

Evolution
It is amazing how imagery can exist through history and be referenced in graphic design through the ages. Nike's head pops up in many places. The FIFI World Cup, a prestigious and global soccer competition, has Nike on their trophy (left). Nike is also a shoe and sports equipment company, an American anti-aircraft missile system and plays a part in the cult manga anime Saint Seiya.

List of Sports
Nike would be good at representing the sports of:
  • cross country running
  • marathons
  • 100m sprints
